KemperSports, the fifth-largest golf course management company in the country, has discussed the possibility of a sale to private equity and is seeking to raise fresh capital, Sportico has learned.
Since its founding in 1978, KemperSports has been owned by Steve Lesnik and the family of co-founder James Kemper Jr., who died in 2002. James Kemper Jr. was well-known in the golf world for his insurance company’s sponsorship of the Kemper Open, a longtime event on both the LPGA and PGA Tours. The KemperSports business had been self-funded until the owners sold equity to three outside investors in 2022. Only one of those investors was publicly disclosed, private equity firm LNC Partners, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Malbon Golf, a brand celebrated for pushing the boundaries of traditional golf culture, is bringing its unique blend of sport and style to Chicago. The company has officially opened a 1,600-square-foot retail space at 833 W. Randolph St, offering a fresh take on how Chicagoans experience golf both on and off the course.
The design of the new store reflects the brand’s signature style with a gallery-inspired aesthetic. Custom-made fixtures, including golf bag racks, putter holders, and shelving units, create a thoughtfully curated environment. Clothing racks feature swirling bases that echo the brand’s logo, with each piece fabricated off-site for a polished and seamless look.

Before the first snowfall Nov. 21, Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor was on track to set a new record after it broke a previous record with 39,528 rounds played this golf season. The old record was 39,120 rounds set in 2021.

The Canal Shores Golf Course began its $5.9 million renovation to bring its irrigation system up to par last year. With a fresh name — The Evans at Canal Shores — the course is teeing off a new era and chipping in with several new youth development programs to the Evanston community.
The first 13 holes reopened in August after being closed since June 2023. The remaining holes — 19 in total, including one new hole to be used primarily for a youth development program — are expected to open in spring 2025, said Josh Lesnik, executive vice president for golf at KemperSports, which operates The Evans.

Despite some recent rain and suddenly falling temperatures, the last few months at the Water’s Edge Golf Course in Worth has been heartwarming.

Cog Hill Golf & Country Club was once a popular destination for golfers seeking to play on legendary courses. It hosted the Western Open, a prestigious PGA Tour event, for many years. However, the tournament was moved in 2011, and Cog Hill's business has since declined. The Jemsek family, who have owned the club since the 1950s, have vowed to keep it a family business despite the challenges.

A century of golf is coming to a close at 22nd and Wolf Road. Located 20 minutes from downtown Chicago in the rolling hills of Hillside, Fresh Meadow Golf Club is closing for good on October 14, 2024.

There was cause for celebration at Medinah Country Club when the last putt dropped in the Presidents Cup Sunday in Montreal. That meant that Medinah, already rich in golf history, went on the clock for another place in golf history.

Parks and Recreation Director Michael Wick is seeking approval from the Lake Forest City Council to extend a contract with Kemper Sports Management for the operations and maintenance of Deerpath Golf Course until December 31, 2029. The council will consider this request at its meeting on September 16.

The Naperville Park District held a ceremony to unveil the Marie Todd Practice Facility at the course at 22204 W. 111th St./Hassert Blvd. in Plainfield.
The practice facility was named for Marie Todd, in recognition of her 18 years of service on the park board, part of which was spent as board president and vice president.

Plans to build a 9-hole domed golf course near Route 30 and a proposed 600-plus unit subdivision in Oswego continue to move forward.
At the Sept. 17 Oswego Village Board meeting, village trustees unanimously approved the concept plans of Canada-based Megalodome Golf to construct four 270,000 square foot golf domes that would house the 9-hole golf course along with a practice facility. An 8,000 square-foot clubhouse also is proposed.
The applicant’s website refers to the project as the world’s first indoor golf experience that replicates a real golf course. The project is proposed for 100 acres west of Route 30 and north of Rance Road.

“I had never picked up a golf club seriously until this little guy,” said Lorenzo Garcia-Garth, Adrian’s father who came from Hyde Park with his family for the First Tee Greater Chicago event. “I never even thought about going to a golf course until Adrian.”

The Ebony Ladies Golf League just marked its 50th anniversary recently with a very glitzy gala, and the ladies have a lot to celebrate. Raoul has been president since 2021 and has been on a mission to bring in more members.

Last year, Northbrook native Nick Hardy won his first event on the PGA Tour at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The 28-year-old, who graduated from Glenbrook North in 2014, owes some of his success to playing golf locally.

"I grew up playing at Anetsberger. My dad first took me there when I was 3 or 4," Hardy, who holds the course record at Anetsberger, told the NPD. "I have so many good memories of playing with my dad, playing with my buddies or my next-door neighbors. Every summer, I'd ride my bike there, with my bag and my clubs on my back."

DINX Social Club, a "luxe pickleball and golf-focused experience," has signed a lease at 1931 Skokie Valley Road near Highway 41 in Highland Park, according to a release from real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield.
According to the release, the 23,000-square-foot venue is set to open in winter of 2024. It will occupy the space recently occupied by home office store Staples, which closed last month.

The CITGO Lemont Refinery has recently acquired the Big Run Golf Club in Lockport, the refinery told Patch in a statement.

The 18-hole Winnetka Golf Club officially launched on Monday, Aug. 12 with a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting in partnership with KemperSports.
The Winnetka Park District facility, managed by KemperSports, had been closed for renovations to include stormwater management in the course’s design. The golf course has existed since 1917.

Over the past 50 years, Naperville residents have created lifelong memories at Springbrook Golf Course. It’s not only been a haven for golfers but also a vital part of the local community.

The Chicago Park District’s Jackson Park Golf Course is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2024. The popular Tom Bendelow-designed municipal course opened on May 11, 1899 and has a history that reads like a golf encyclopedia. Named after Former President Andrew Jackson, Jackson Park Golf Course was built on land that hosted the 1893 World’s Fair and is part of the larger Jackson Park, which extends along Lake Michigan on Chicago’s South Side.

Phil Mickelson has never stepped foot on Bolingbrook Golf Club’s course, but was pleased to hear Wednesday that Arthur Hills was the course architect for the layout, which will host the LIV Golf Individual Championship in September.
“I played one of his courses at Palmetto Dunes [in South Carolina] for a college tournament,” Mickelson said of Hills, who died in 2021. “I think he’s a wonderful architect, has done some great stuff. I did not know he was the architect at Bolingbrook, but that, to me, is pretty exciting. I think he’s very credible as an architect and am excited to see what he’s come up with.”

Volunteer opportunities are available for LIV Golf Chicago, which will be held Sept. 13-15 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, according to a news release.

Village of Glencoe officials believe demolition of the existing Glencoe Golf Club clubhouse will start this fall as preparations continue for the estimated $18.6 million project.
Glencoe staff members provided village trustees with an update on both the budget and the construction plans for the overhaul of the Golf Club at a June 20 Committee of the Whole meeting.
Last year, a majority of village residents approved a $15 million bond sale referendum to fund most of the project set to be highlighted by a new combined clubhouse and pro shop.

Golfers are playing rounds at Calumet Country Club this summer, three years after an Arizona developer had hoped to convert the property into a warehousing facility, but his plans are shifting to another use.

Representatives from The McCormick Foundation, KemperSports, Cantigny Golf and Quitno Golf Design gathered this week to celebrate the start of a three-year renovation project that will reinvigorate all three of Cantigny Golf’s 9-hole courses in Wheaton, Illinois, starting with Hillside this year.
The renovation project is the evolution and modernization of Cantigny’s 35-year commitment to delivering one of the top golf experiences in Chicagoland public golf.
“This is an incredibly proud day for all of us at Cantigny Golf,” McCormick Foundation CEO Tim Knight said. “This renovation will ensure the long-term playability of our classic public golf course while highlighting the beautiful natural setting of Cantigny Park.”

If the commission decides to cut ties with Chicago, it could take 12 to 15 years to build the necessary infrastructure and cost roughly $5.3 billion to $7 billion, depending on the pipeline route they take, officials estimate.

On Tuesday Bolingbrook Golf Club was named host of LIV’s 13th event of the 2024 season. When the Saudi-backed circuit released its schedule last fall, Chicago was earmarked to receive an event, but was without a home course. Bolingbrook previously hosted a 2021 Forme Tour, the PGA Tour affiliated minor-league formed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide competition for non-Canadian PGA Tour Canada members.

The Lake County Forest Preserve District is going robotic to mow grass and pick up balls on driving ranges at its Countryside and ThunderHawk golf courses.
With record usage in recent years at both courses, using electric-powered robots will allow the grounds and clubhouse staff to spend more time in other areas, said Alex Eichman, director of golf.
“Each location will have two machines,” he said. “We'll work over the next few weeks to set up a plan and do some testing.”

In the summer and fall of 2023, the Evanston/Wilmette Golf Association, working with Wadsworth Construction, restructured all 18 holes of the Canal Shores Golf Course, including the addition of a training facility located at holes 1 and 2 of the old course layout. Elgin has hired FMG Architects Inc. to design a new facility that will be ADA-compliant, enhance the park’s golfing experience, create a safe shelter for patrons and generate additional revenues for Elgin, City Manager Rick Kozal told the Elgin City Council at its Wednesday night meeting.

He said the review revealed systemic issues resulting in substantial inconsistencies in the inventory count dating back at least a decade. The investigation showed more than $214,000 of missing, aged unsaleable, and excess inventory, Summers said.

The giant golf dome at Green Garden Country Club collapsed earlier this month under the stress of the cold, windy, rainy weather punishing the suburban area. It was the second time in 13 years that the roof of the popular indoor golf center had given way. The stadium is a favored winter recreation center for golfers, who just can’t wait for mild weather and the greens.
