Golf Course Manager KemperSports Seeking New Capital, Sale Discussed

Scott Soshnick, Brendan Coffey
KemperSports, the fifth-largest golf course management company in the country, has discussed the possibility of a sale to private equity and is seeking to raise fresh capital, Sportico has learned.

Since its founding in 1978, KemperSports has been owned by Steve Lesnik and the family of co-founder James Kemper Jr., who died in 2002. James Kemper Jr. was well-known in the golf world for his insurance company’s sponsorship of the Kemper Open, a longtime event on both the LPGA and PGA Tours. The KemperSports business had been self-funded until the owners sold equity to three outside investors in 2022. Only one of those investors was publicly disclosed, private equity firm LNC Partners, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The plan presented to the public during the fall of 2022 and early spring of 2023 would have had a warehousing anchor surrounded by a number of other uses, including hospitality, recreation, urban agriculture and office.

Open to children ages 5 through 12, Beckman said youngsters who complete the four-week clinic learning the fundamentals of the game get to keep their set of clubs and get new ones as they grow bigger. Scholarships are also available.

Cantigny Golf Club
Park Ridge-based course architect Todd Quitno just began a three-year project to upgrade Cantigny, the 35-year old 27-hole facility that has been particularly notable for its commitment to growing the game through its Youth Links layout. It won’t be touched in the renovation and. Because Cantigny is blessed with 27 holes, its regulars will always have an 18-hole layout available.
Hillside, the shortest of Cantigny’s three nines, will undergo its renovation this year with Woodside and Lakeside combining on the 18-hole scorecard. Woodside gets its upgrades in 2025 and Lakeside in 2026. Cantigny has hosted five Illinois State Amateurs, but the next scheduled one will be pushed back two years, to 2026.

An excellent question, one I wish golf leaders and the people who play the sport at the highest level would ask more often. I wish Scheffler had asked it before getting into a dispute that landed him in jail. I wish the players who bolted the PGA Tour for LIV Golf had asked it before they took blood money from the Saudis. I wish Tiger Woods had asked it before his career went off the rails because of messy, non-golf issues.

A new era for Canal Shores

Richard Humphreys
The Evans at Canal Shores
When the Canal Shores Golf Course in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, reopens this summer, it will mark the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new era for the public facility.

Originally opened in 1919, Canal Shores has for some time been in dire need of repair. A USGA Green Section evaluation several years ago noted that the course’s turf and infrastructure were in an “end of life” state.

“The course had aged to a point where turfgrasses were compromised, greens were failing, the irrigation system was no longer providing the necessary coverage and the lack of drainage was becoming a major issue,” says Doug Myslinski, from Wadsworth. The golf construction firm had, over the years, provided “band-aid” repairs while Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation had
made annual contributions to assist Canal Shores in youth golf development programs.
