Deerpath Golf Course Overview
In the upscale community of Lake Forest, Deerpath Golf Course offers a classic golfing experience with a fresh, modern feel. This historic course has been a staple for local golfers for nearly a century, continually investing in itself to provide an exceptional day on the links. Opened in 1926 as a 9-hole layout, a round would have set you back a mere $1.50 on weekdays according to a Chicago Tribune article back then. By 1931, the course expanded to the 18 holes that golfers enjoy today. Owned by the City of Lake Forest and managed by KemperSports, Deerpath has overcome some
struggles of the 2010’s
and is now a thriving hub for golfers, thanks in part to the Covid-fueled surge in the sport's popularity and significant recent investments in its facilities. The 2017 closing of nearby muni
Highland Park Country Club
probably didn’t hurt either.
The course's design legacy begins with its original architect, Alex Pirie, a notable figure who was the golf professional at the prestigious Old Elm Golf Club and also a former president of the PGA. His foundational layout was later redesigned by Ken Killian and Dick Nugent, shaping the course into the fair but engaging challenge it is today. Stretching to 6,200 yards from the back tees, it carries a rating of 70.2 and a slope of 131. its difficulty is comparable to
Heritage Oaks,
Old Orchard, and
Fox Run.
The layout is quite flat, making for an enjoyable walk with sensible 10-minute tee time spacing that keeps play moving. Compare that to
Lake Bluff GC, which offers 7 and 8 minute tee time increments -- not ideal. Water comes into play in the form of various ponds and the Skokie River meandering along the eastern edge. Golfers will appreciate the square tee boxes and consistently 30-yard wide fairways that offer some breathing room. The generous distance between holes also offers some relief. With only a handful of homes bordering the property, the course provides a feeling of being immersed in nature. The par-70 layout features two par-5s and four par-3s, demanding accuracy and thoughtful shot-making.
The crown jewel of Deerpath's recent improvements is
The Lawn, a massive 30,000-square-foot bentgrass putting green introduced in 2022. Designed by Todd Quinto and inspired by famous putting courses like the Ladies' Putting Course at St. Andrews and the Gauntlet at Streamsong Resort, it's one of the few facilities where you can rent the putting green exclusively for events. The practice facility also includes a grass-tee driving range and a smaller practice green. The clubhouse features a densely packed pro shop and the Sandwedge Grill, which serves everything from sandwiches and burgers to avocado toast on a pleasant outdoor patio.
