Billy Caldwell Golf Course Overview Updated May 21, 2025

Billy Caldwell Golf Course is a historic 9-hole course located in Chicago’s Edgebrook neighborhood, originally opened in 1925. It is one of ten courses operated by the Forest Preserves of Cook County and aligns with the others in terms of maintenance and amenities -- generally well-kept given budget constraints, but not pristine. The course has an unpretentious and casual atmosphere, with many players stopping by before or after work. I used to live in the vicinity and did so myself many times. The pricing reflects a value-oriented approach, and it's not unusual to see unconventional play, such as a golfer pushing a stroller, which I witnessed one beautiful weekend day.

The North Branch of the Chicago River borders the western edge of the course, at times leading to flooding on the 5th and 6th holes after heavy rain. I’ve played the course at a reduced rate with those holes removed from play. The fairways and greens on those holes tend to be in poorer condition due to the recurring water issues.

The track is a par-35 layout measuring 3,108 yards, with a course rating of 34.8 and a slope of 115. It offers a level of challenge comparable to Wing Park, Marquette Park, and Willow Hill. The course is composed of eight par-4s and one downhill par-3. A single body of water affects play on two holes, and the course has no bunkers and mostly flat greens. Billy Caldwell defends itself with narrow fairways and trees that closely border the parallel holes. Some elevation is present, particularly on holes 5, 6, and 7. While golf carts are available, the course is easily walkable, and I encourage you to do so.

Billy Caldwell doesn’t have a driving range or hitting nets, but it does offer one practice green located near the pro shop, and a second, smaller green to the right of the first tee. I’ve never seen anyone use the latter green. Like most of the Forest Preserve courses, the facility does not have a traditional clubhouse; instead, a single building serves as the pro shop. The shop carries a modest selection of golf merch, but it does provide the essential items you need to have a great time on the golf course that day.
