Maple Meadows Golf Club prides itself on reasonable prices and well-conditioned greens.

The public course, formerly part of Brookwood Country Club, logged about 37,000 rounds of golf this year. But in its current state, Maple Meadows has drainage issues and nearly 30-year-old infrastructure.

For the average golfer, all the massive bunkers can slow the pace of play and make for a frustrating round. Some bunkers are filled with standing water after heavy rains.

In an effort to modernize Maple Meadows, DuPage County Forest Preserve officials are laying the groundwork for an overhaul of the district-owned property in Wood Dale.

Expectations typically run low at your neighborhood public golf course dining room. Wilmette’s was no different.

“My education, my friends, my family, the game of golf, everything I got from this amazing town, and this is sort of my way to give back to the community,” he said.

Settler’s Hill Honored by the ASGCA

Greg Miles
Settler's Hill Golf Course
Congratulations to Settler’s Hill Golf Course, Batavia-based architect Greg Martin, and GolfVisions for having been named as an honoree of the 2023 American Society of Golf Course Architects Environmental Excellence Award. Projects from nine golf facilities across the United States have been cited for their work with ASGCA members in addressing unique environmental challenges.

Renovation of this 30-year-old course was unique as many existing holes reside on a landfill, while others border neighboring oak/hickory forests and landfill transition areas. All drainage, both overland and underground, needed to be carried to specified locations off the landfill cap prior to release; additionally, the approval of public and private entities needed to be met.

It was a bit curious last week when representatives of the Western Golf Association and BMW chose to announce a future tournament location that is not in the same city where the tournament was played this year.

The fact that the tournament—once anchored in the Chicago area for 44 consecutive years through 2007—has been leaving the Windy City more frequently in recent times remains a bit of a sore subject locally. The idea of one of the country’s best golf markets going without a tournament annually is still somewhat hard to believe.

This week’s BMW Championship is a return to one of our nation’s original golf enclaves. Two-time British Open champion Willie Park Jr. immodestly called his creation, “the equal of any golf course I have ever seen. I know of none that is superior, either in beauty or natural terrain.”

Everything here was big: The clubhouse was the biggest in the world at more than 100,000 square feet and its 10,000-square-foot locker room is still among the most massive in golf. Though the club sold the land on which two of its four courses stood for real estate during the hard times of the 1940s, the North and South course today comprise one of the best 36-hole facilities in golf.

State-wide qualifying rounds largely determine the field in the Illinois Open. There are seven of those, and one couldn't be completed because of rain delays. With rescheduling deemed impossible, the Illinois PGA opted to give all potential qualifiers spots in the finals.

That meant 168 starters at Flossmoor instead of the usual 156, the maximum number permitted in both PGA Tour and Korn Ferry events. In our humble opinion, neither Rahm nor Irwin have anything on Korn Ferry Tour pro Tom Whitney, who missed what has to be the shortest putt in the history of televised golf. That's a moniker we're comfortable putting on this one. The shortest miss in the history of televised golf. Probably 6 inches or less. The Korn Ferry Tour does not have the proper shot tracker technology, so we're left to guess.

It’s not often a tour player has to worry about running out of golf balls, but the second-round co-leader of this week’s Korn Ferry Tour event found himself in just such a predicament.

It all started Thursday, after an opening-round 60 had propelled Ryan McCormick into the lead at the NV5 Invitational, in Glenview, Ill. That evening, McCormick kept his putting stroke sharp with a practice session in his hotel room. When he had finished, he slipped the ball he had been using — a 2021-22 model Titleist ProV1 — into his golf bag.

That’s when things got complicated. In tournaments, McCormick plays a 2023 model ProV1, but the next day he unintentionally began his second round at the Glen Club with the same older model ball with which he had been practicing — and he had only one.

Before it announced a year-long renovation scheduled to start this coming June, Evanston’s Canal Shores Golf Course, largely located in and around the Seventh Ward, looked like it was digging its own grave.

Facing severe problems with irrigation, drainage, shade and other fundamental structures of any course, Canal Shores Board of Trustees President Matt Rooney decided to have a U.S. Golf Association expert take a look at the facility.

What they found were 14 unsustainable greens out of 18 total. The USGA deemed Canal Shores to be in an “end of life” situation.

She didn't back off much after that, either, finishing in a tie for eighth place in the second full-field event of the LPGA season.

After moving into their dream home in 2020, Debbie Weber was astounded at the number of balls sailing onto their property from Tamarack Golf Course off Route 59 in southern Naperville.

And so, she decided to return all the wayward balls to the golfers, but do so in a way it would raise money for one of her favorite charities: Loaves & Fishes food pantry, where Larry has volunteered for many years.

After collecting hundreds of them last year with a neighbor, Debbie Weber placed them in a bin on the 17th hole that borders her back yard, with a sign that touted “Free Golf Balls” and a suggestion that in exchange, they leave behind some cash for the food pantry.

"This is something we have been discussing for a number of years, at this point," Village Manager Phil Kiraly said.

The proposed bond issue is estimated to cost taxpayers up to an additional $140 per $10,000 of property taxes for the next two decades.

The Canal Shores Golf Course in north Evanston and southeast Wilmette is eyeing a long-awaited revamp, with an estimated price tag of nearly $5.9 million.
