Main storylines

1. Scottie is red-hot

Fresh off three wins in his last four starts, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is a clear favorite heading to Oakmont for the U.S. Open. While he has yet to win his national open, the three-time major champion has a strong track record with three top-10 finishes in seven appearances.

2. Which Rory will show up?

Rory McIlroy is looking to bounce back at the U.S. Open after a challenging outing at the RBC Canadian Open, where he missed the cut by 12 strokes. He intends to address issues with his driver before the championship. This recent setback is at odds with his stellar U.S. Open form, which includes six straight top-10 finishes and a runner-up placement last year. Interestingly, McIlroy believes playing the week before the U.S. Open has been key to his success, a change he made after missing the cut three years in a row (2016-18).

3. Bryson looks to repeat

Bryson DeChambeau, who secured his second U.S. Open title last year with a clutch final-hole par, is now aiming to become the first player to win the event in back-to-back years since Brooks Koepka in 2018. The fan favorite is in strong form, having finished as the runner-up at last month's PGA Championship. Since joining LIV Golf in 2022, DeChambeau has been a force in the majors, recording seven top-10 finishes in twelve starts.

4. Oakmont is brutal, as always

Regarded as the nation's toughest track, Oakmont Country Club is set to host its record 10th U.S. Open. The course's punishing features, from its dense rough to its slick greens, are famous for keeping scores high. As a par-70 layout, only four total players finished under par in the last two U.S. Opens held here (2007, 2016), underscoring its brutal difficulty.

Course prep is bordering on comical

We already know Oakmont is one of the toughest tests in all of golf, particularly in the hands of the USGA. Watching the volunteer grounds crew mow the crazy rough in synchronized choreography is something.

And it's hilly out there...

Is this a barbershop or a golf course?

The ultra-long par-3 8th hole is gonna give people fits this week. Min Woo Lee hit driver on the hole during practice Monday.

Jason Day's Malbon outfits strike again

Always a lightning rod, Jason Day's scripting brings out social media's finest. Today he didn't disappoint with wild American flag shorts.

Golf Channel's Johnson Wagner battles the pews

Everyone's favorite on-course analyst Johnson Wagner got into the mix showing how difficult the pew bunkers are at Oakmont. Fast forward to 2:20 to see him skunk one hard left. I don't use the word hero very often.

More grounds crew porn

The all-star volunteers getting Oakmont in shape this week are proving to be highly entertaining. People can't get enough of this stuff. Ben Griffin, currently the #15 ranked golfer in the world, shared this video on his TikTok.
@bengriffingolf Grounds crew at Oakmont is built different. Fun fact: The grounds crew uses blowers on the rough, which helps eliminate the typical ‘down grain’ and ‘into the grain’ lies. As a result, the ball tends to sit down further into the rough #usopen #oakmont #pga #golf #BauduccoLover ♬ Trendsetter - Connor Price & Haviah Mighty

Oakmont is hillier than it looks on TV

There's unconventional ways to find the green, and then there's this. Zac Blair used a putter from 122 yards out on the first hole to showcase how Oakmont makes you think differently about shots. It was an excellent strike. Marc Leishman got in on the action too on Wednesday.

Deep rough riffs

Oakmont's shaggy jungle rough continues to captivate. Golf.com's Claire Rogers (and her followers) have an ongoing bit about the depth. And apparently she lost her glasses for real somewhere, perhaps in the thick stuff.
Claire Rogers tweet mocking the deep rough with characters from the Titanic movie at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont

What would an average golfer score at Oakmont?

People love to ask this rhetorical question about tough major course setups, particularly at US Opens. Justin Thomas posed the question himself! Well, it's not rhetorical any more. Reports are coming in from media members allowed to play the course this week.

Soly of No Laying Up, a 1-handicap, shot an 88:

The Barstool boys have a full Youtube video about their experience playing this 7,500 yard beast. They teed from where the pros tee and hit cups. Spoiler alert: predictably, it was ugly, but not as bad as I thought it might be.

Ugly US Open merch

There's been a meta discussion lately about distasteful golf attire. Big letter hats, upside-down word hats, etc. It's top of mind. This Oakmont hat, if you can decipher it, is getting rightly roasted.
Photo of an ugly hat in the merchandise tent at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont

A great behind-the-scenes look at volunteering

The USGA published this awesome video showcasing what it's like to help out at the US Open driving range. The type of operation you never think twice about, but under the hood there's a ton going on. What we see:
  1. Each ball is washed in a ball washing machine
  2. They are then manually rinsed, cleaned, and dried
  3. The balls are painstakingly sorted according to manufacturer and ball type for the world's best players
There's a bit more in the video but it's great to see this kind of stuff that makes you appreciate all the work that goes into hosting an Open.

Bryson DeChambeau continues to lean into his "showmanship"

Bryson's fan-friendly theatric turn continues. After being annoying and prickly and whiny for years, he's now done a 180 and oozes fan-friendliness, shtick, and happiness everywhere he goes. His Youtube channel is wildly popular, though there are unverified claims that it's fully or partially owned by the LIV Tour itself. During a practice round, amateur Preston Summerhays took a divot that hit Bryson in the head, and Bryson picked up the turf and put it on his hat.
Screenshot of a Twitter post that shows Bryson DeChambeau with a turf divot on his hat at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont

Is any of Bryson DeChambeau's new attitude authentic? Bryson cast some doubt on that himself in his media availability today, with Kyle Porter highlighting the good stuff. Bryson says he's "more strategic in how I deliver things," which leads to "some cool style points that come from it." Though, his word salad of an answer definitely leaves it open to interpretation.

Round 1 - Thursday June 12

Play is underway at the 2025 US Open!

Broadcast partner NBC and USA are telecasting the event this week. USA has the main broadcast, while there's featured group coverage on 3 other NBC Sports channels.

Broadcast gripes

Predictably, people are already complaining about the ad load on the broadcast. This has been a consistent problem in the NBC golf universe.

Rory gets the full Oakmont rough treatment

On Rory's 13th hole (Oakmont's 4th), he hit it right, and struggled with several shots to extricate himself from the deep stuff. He drilled a 30 foot putt for a great bogey save.

JJ Spaun grinds out a fantastic round 1

JJ, originally from Los Angeles, is your early clubhouse leader. He delivered a bogie-free 66, drilling a series of long clutch putts. His scorecard included 14 pars and 4 birdies. It was only the 8th bogie-free round in the history of U.S. Opens at brutal Oakmont Country Club. Also, his 66 matched the lowest first-round score in history at an Oakmont U.S. Open.
Screenshot of a Twitter showing JJ Spaun's bogie-free scorecard at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont

🦅 Patrick Reed with an albatross! 🦅

Just the 4th double eagle in US Open history! First time since Nick Watney made one in 2012. He did it on the 4th hole, from 286 yards away!
Predictably, all the Patrick Reed jokes came to the surface. A Wikipedia blast from ANTIFaldo, Starbucks strawberry refresher joke from Claire Rogers, a quip about @useGolfFacts, and more.

Update: Talking to the media after the round, P Reed was his typical electric, jubilant, fan-friendly self discussing the shot.

Big head, small body

The official US Open account published one of the weirder posts with JJ Spaun, Bryson DeChambeau, Tommy Fleetwood, and Shane Lowry photoshopped to look like old video game cheat code characters with extra big heads. People seemed confused in the comments but generally liked it. I think it's hilarious.

We have a new PGA Tour CEO?

An NFL executive named Brian Rolapp, currently serving as the league's EVP, is apparently coming into the PGA Tour org to work alongside current commissioner Jay Monahan.

Scottie is not having a good time

Scheffler struggled throughout his back nine, currently at 3-over through 16 holes. One approach shot had him seeing red:

Brooks is surging

The often-forgotten Brooks Koepka is playing well in this first round action at Oakmont. He finished at -2, shooting a 68, while birding the final two holes.
Screenshot of a Twitter post showing Brooks Koepka on the course at Oakmont.

JJ Spaun ends the day as your round 1 leader. Weather should be good again on Friday, though there is a small chance of rain. Wind should be negligible -- ideal scoring conditions again!

Round 2 - Friday, June 13

Who's winning at Oakmont today? The Course

The USGA's setup today is flexing it's muscles, despite perfect scoring conditions in the morning rounds. Wind is minimal, no precipitation, all systems go. Yet the vast majority of golfers are really struggling. Brooks Koepka is +3 through 13 today to sit at +1 overall. Sungjae Im is +6 through 12, currently at +4 overall. Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Russell Henley, Marc Leishman, and more are all +4 or more so far. The course is winning.
Screenshot of a Twitter post showing Will Chandler's brutal scorecard in round 2 at Oakmont US Open.

Sam Burns delivers rare excellence in round 2

While almost everyone wilted today, Sam Burns swashbuckled his way to a startling 65, becoming one of just 12 players to shoot a 65 or better at an Oakmont US Open. He's currently in 3rd place at -3, behind JJ Spaun (-4) and South Africa's Thriston Lawrence (-5). It's the lowest round of the week thus far.

Golf Digest invented something called National Golf Cart Day

How the mighty have fallen. Golf Digest published a sponsored ad (for EZGOvehicles) on Twitter boasting the benefits of golf carts over walking. They predictably got ratio'd, with a 6:1 balance of comments to likes as I write this. The ridiculous video does seem tongue in cheek, but regardless, people aren't trying to hear it right now. People are in US Open mode -- ridiculously hard tests of golf are de rigueur. Hard walks. Brutal rough. Insane bunkers. Steep uphill walks. Read the room Golf Digest.

Shane Lowry forgot to mark his ball on the green

The mental test is just as hard as the physical one. A momentary lapse in judgement caused Lowry to pick his ball up on the 14th green before marking it. That's a one stroke penalty. He was well outside of the cut line anyway.

Rory is melting down at Oakmont

Despite being inside the cut line, Rory McIlroy is so done with this place. He we see him throwing his club in disgust down the fairway at the par-5 12th hole. Very un-Rory-like behavior. Frustrating is boiling over. He was able to save par though!

And now he destroys a tee marker at the par-4 17th hole, a short (305 yard), gettable hole. He ended up making par on the hole. And then birdied 18 to ensure he made the cut.

US Open bloodbath going into the weekend

Round 2 play concluded Saturday morning due to dangerous weather and darkness Friday night; 13 players didn't complete round 2 on Friday. Only 3 players going into the weekend under par: Sam Burns, JJ Spaun, and Viktor Hovland.

The following notable players missed the cut:
  • Bryson DeChambeau (LIV, last year's champ)
  • Ludvig Åberg
  • Justin Thomas
  • Tommy Fleetwood
  • Dustin Johnson (LIV)
  • Joaquin Niemann (LIV)
  • Phil Mickelson (LIV)
  • Sepp Straka
  • Shane Lowry
  • Justin Rose
  • Cameron Smith (LIV)
  • Wyndham Clark
  • Patrick Cantlay

What does Saturday hold? More carnage, I suspect.

Round 3 - Saturday, June 14

Moving day is underway at the US Open

The day began with Sam Burns at -3, JJ Spaun at -2, and Viktor Hovland at -1. Rain's in the forecast! Let's see how the world's best respond.

The Fried Egg presented an awesome short video showing course changes at Oakmont throughout the many decades they've hosted US Opens (starting in 1966). The tree removal from 2007 to 2025 is especially striking.

Golf.com reminds us how Oakmont exacts its toll

Here we see Xander on a ridiculously steep, very deep patch of rough, aiming the opposite direction of the flagstick.

Art but Make it Sports chimes in

Viktor Hovland lost his tee shot in the bushes on the right with his opening tee shot of round 3, memorialized by the prolific @ArtButSports account.

Rory *finally* talks to the media (briefly)

After dodging intrepid golf reporters for 6 straight rounds at major tournaments, Rory finally spoke to the media. He barely had anything to say. Kyle Porter has a theory on why Rory's been playing such uninspiring golf since his electric Masters win in April, and his subsequent frustration with the media.

Oakmont is so hard, golfers brains are broken

We saw this with Shane Lowry forgetting to mark his ball, but Scottie Scheffler reinforces the notion that this US Open is breaking players.

Golfers who really battled today: Sam Burns, JJ Spaun, Adam Scott, Viktor Hovland

Adam Scott (T2) carded an amazing 67 today, low round of the day tied with Mexico's Carlos Ortiz (5th place). Scott will be in the final pairing Sunday with Sam Burns. Tyrrell Hatton shot a 68 and is T6 with Thriston Lawrence. JJ Spaun stayed in contention with a crafty 1-under par 69 to finish T2 himself. Hovland is hovering in 4th place, finishing with an even-par 70 today.

Timeless wonder Adam Scott

With Adam Scott in contention for his second major, focus shifted to his age and how long he's been relevant in professional golf. He told the media "If I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career." According to Justin Ray, "the longest gap between a player's 1st and 2nd major championship win is 11 years - Julius Boros and Ben Crenshaw. Adam Scott's lone major win was more than 12 years ago."
Screenshot of a Twitter post showing @ArtButSports content about Viktor Hovland.

According to the Fried Egg, With a win tomorrow, Adam Scott would become the second-oldest player to win the U.S. Open, after Hale Irwin.

Johnson is back at it

Everyone's favorite golf analyst Johnson Wagner was on the scene, recreating shots on the 17th hole from Viktor Hovland, Sam Burns, and Adam Scott.

Sunday is likely to be epic!

Wyndham Clark allegedly went berserk in the Oakmont locker room after round 2?

Tron Carter, golf podcaster/analyst/influencer/rabble rouser/EU Ryder Cup enthusiast of No Laying Up alleged that Wyndham Clark, after a frustrating round and missing the cut yesterday, "got after it in the Oakmont locker room," apparently "desecrating one of the most historic spots in golf." While not yet confirmed, this behavior comes on the heels of his reckless actions at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, which he later apologized for.

Round 4 - Sunday June 15

Father's Day is upon us!

The traditional final day of every US Open, Father's Day brings a fun and sentimental aspect to the proceedings at the US Open, as the golfers often reflect on how their fathers helped them get to this point in their golf journeys. And many of the golfers are newer dads themselves, with lots of shots of Scottie Scheffler's kid playing around Oakmont this week. It's a great storyline every year. Here we see Jordan Spieth reflecting on his own dad.

The par-3 8th hole is over 300 yards today!

Oakmont's 8th hole becomes the longest par-3 in major history, clocking in at 301 yards today. This will be a real test for the world's best.

Rory: not in contention, but has the coolest moves

Watch Rory McIlroy effortlessly throw his golf club at his bag.. and somehow it magically bounces back at him at just the right angle, and he casually catches it in his other hand. Pros: they're good at everything

Even when you hit good shots, Oakmont doesn't care

Here we see JJ Spaun hitting a dart into the 2nd green, but he hits the flagstick and it ricochets well off the green.

Scottie's struggles continue

Everyone wondered if Scottie Scheffler would make a final-round charge. The answer is no. He's really struggling on the greens, with a 3-putt bogey on the 11th.

A new dilemma for golfers at Oakmont: Rain

The region was enveloped by a massive storm, stopping play. It's bad out there. The players are going to have to deal with this new challenge. Completely different conditions, wet greens, soaked fairways. All part of the psychological torture of Oakmont's US Open.

During the rain delay, NBC decided to replay the 2008 US Open!

A very interesting broadcast decision from NBC: showing the Rocco Mediate vs Tiger Woods battle at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. Ahh, the memories! People commented on everything about it, with fashion being a major highlight (both the golfers and the cargo pants in the galleries).

People started live-tweeting the 2008 US Open, including the official US Open X account.

The rain subsided and the amazing grounds crew here is getting things back in order.

Struggles continue post-rain delay

The course really flexed its muscles, with the final several groups all struggling to play well. Sam Burns, Adam Scott, JJ Spaun, Viktor Hovland, and Carlos Ortiz all lost strokes, and the rain only intensified the decision-making in the afternoon. After Sam Burns double bogied 11, no one in the field was under par.

Signs of life from JJ Spaun

Despite shooting 40 on the front nine, Spaun makes birdie at 12 with a long putt, and he's one off the lead at +1. Jon Rahm becomes the clubhouse leader at +3.

Robert Macintyre posts a +1 score!

4 players are tied for the lead at +1. Bobby Mac finishes his round at 1-over, cementing his clubhouse lead status. Someone will need birdies to beat him! Will this go into a playoff? All this, as Sam Burns struggles with a shot in the extremely wet fairway. He asked for relief but was denied by two rules officials. Burns proceeded to double bogey 15.

JJ Spaun throws a dart onto 17

Incredible drive from JJ on the penultimate hole of his tournament sets up an eagle putt! The shot of the tournament with everything on the line. He ends up 2-putting for birdie and takes the lead by one! According to Jamie Kennedy, out of 448 drives on the 17th hole this week, only five finished closer than Spaun's (17 feet).

Screenshot of a Twitter post showing JJ Spauns good shot.

JJ Spaun is your 2025 US Open Champion!

JJ hit a perfect drive on 18 that found the fairway, hit an approach to 64 feet, and drilled it for birdie! It was the longest made putt by anyone in the field this week. What an amazing run for the first time major winner! Electric scene!

In betting odds, he was an unbelievable +12000 to start the week. That's a 1 in 120 chance, according to Vegas. The father of two young kids has made his dreams come true on Father's Day. Him and Ben Hogan are the only two players to finish birdie-birdie to win a US Open at Oakmont.
Screenshot of a Twitter post showing JJ Spaun winning the 2025 US Open
