$7M Gift To Glenview's Evans Scholars Foundation 'Transformational'

The Evans Scholars Foundation has a long history of helping golf caddies further their education. According to the Glenview-based non-profit, a record 1,130 Evans Scholars currently attend 24 universities nationwide. That number will grow next year, as well as other program at ESF, thanks to a generous donation.
Chicago-area philanthropists John and Kathy Schrieber recently gifted $7.05 million to ESF, a donation the organization said is one of the largest they've ever received.

Settler’s Hill Honored by the ASGCA

Congratulations to Settler’s Hill Golf Course, Batavia-based architect Greg Martin, and GolfVisions for having been named as an honoree of the 2023 American Society of Golf Course Architects Environmental Excellence Award. Projects from nine golf facilities across the United States have been cited for their work with ASGCA members in addressing unique environmental challenges.
Renovation of this 30-year-old course was unique as many existing holes reside on a landfill, while others border neighboring oak/hickory forests and landfill transition areas. All drainage, both overland and underground, needed to be carried to specified locations off the landfill cap prior to release; additionally, the approval of public and private entities needed to be met.

The Food Guy: The Lawn at the Wilmette Golf Club (Review)

Expectations typically run low at your neighborhood public golf course dining room. Wilmette’s was no different.
“It was kind of a glorified hot dog stand,” said Michael Madden.
So Madden – a Wilmette native who launched a pair of Left Coast Food & Juice concepts in the city – decided to tackle a refresh.
“My education, my friends, my family, the game of golf, everything I got from this amazing town, and this is sort of my way to give back to the community,” he said.

Bill Murray’s Childhood Golf Course Is Coming Back to Life

Canal Shores Golf Course in Evanston, Ill., is most known for its unique setting in the middle of a bustling suburb of Chicago, for the trains that chug along right by a few holes and for the fact that the course is where comedian Bill Murray and his brother grew up playing and working long before the Caddyshack days.
Come next summer, and the completion of a $5.9 million renovation four years in the making, the 104-year-old course will be known for more.

Additions coming to 2024 Chicago District Golf Association schedule

The Chicago District Golf Association won't announce its 2024 tournament schedule until Dec. 6 but it will include two major additions.
For 90 years the Illinois Women's Golf Association, a group based downstate, conducted the Illinois Women's State Amateur as well as state championships for senior and junior players. With IWGA membership dwindling, those events likely would have been discontinued had the CDGA not stepped in.

Plans for new clubhouse at Glencoe Golf Club continue

Planning continues for the new Glencoe Golf Club clubhouse both for the design of the building and private fundraising efforts coinciding with the taxpayer investment.
On Nov. 16, Glencoe Village Board Trustees received a presentation regarding the village’s ad hoc committee’s recommendation for a “Prairie-style” design for the exterior of the clubhouse building that will include a pro shop and dining facilities.

Carriage Greens Country Club Battle Gets Bitter

The owners of the two businesses at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien don't get along. But they continue to work near each other.
A couple of months ago, the owners of Carriage Greens Country Club tried to force out the company that runs the Sandtrap Grill and banquet facility at its club.
In August, employees of the company, Carriage Greens F and B LLC, were told that the operators of a new restaurant were taking over.
