Food pantry funding idea a big hit with golfers at Tamarack
Denise Crosby, Beacon-News

After moving into their dream home in 2020, Debbie Weber was astounded at the number of balls sailing onto their property from Tamarack Golf Course off Route 59 in southern Naperville.

And so, she decided to return all the wayward balls to the golfers, but do so in a way it would raise money for one of her favorite charities: Loaves & Fishes food pantry, where Larry has volunteered for many years.

After collecting hundreds of them last year with a neighbor, Debbie Weber placed them in a bin on the 17th hole that borders her back yard, with a sign that touted “Free Golf Balls” and a suggestion that in exchange, they leave behind some cash for the food pantry.

Winnetka's Szokol is back on the LPGA Tour and making noise
Len Ziehm, Daily Herald

Chicago's only LPGA Tour player is back in business.

Elizabeth Szokol, who grew up in Winnetka, won the 2012 Illinois Women's State Amateur and spent half her college years at Northwestern, exploded with an opening round 64 in the HSBC Women's World Championship last week in Singapore.

She didn't back off much after that, either, finishing in a tie for eighth place in the second full-field event of the LPGA season.

The secret to saving Canal Shores? Teaching kids to caddy
Duncan Agnew, Evanston Roundtable

Before it announced a year-long renovation scheduled to start this coming June, Evanston’s Canal Shores Golf Course, largely located in and around the Seventh Ward, looked like it was digging its own grave.

Facing severe problems with irrigation, drainage, shade and other fundamental structures of any course, Canal Shores Board of Trustees President Matt Rooney decided to have a U.S. Golf Association expert take a look at the facility.

What they found were 14 unsustainable greens out of 18 total. The USGA deemed Canal Shores to be in an “end of life” situation.

Golf course to undergo nearly $6M renovation
Jeff Hirsh, Evanston Now

We’re talking about the Canal Shores Golf Course. Starting in July, the course will close several holes at a time, so that by Aug. 1, all 18 greens will be off limits to duffers, hackers, and future superstars. A $5.9 million facelift will get the 103-year-old facility ready to last another century.

But besides changing the layout of some fairways, fixing the greens, and removing some deteriorating trees., Canal Shores also plans to add a mission.

Rooney said the course will “aim for a broader audience with a focus on youth.”

Locals, however, have had success in the Masters preliminaries -- the Augusta National Women's Amateur, which started in 2019, and the Drive, Chip & Putt finals, first contested at the Georgia club in 2014.

Fed up with Cook County red tape, Olympia Fields Country Club asks village to annex land
Ted Slowik, Daily Southtown

One of the Chicago area’s most prestigious country clubs and golf courses is seeking a new home.

The exclusive Olympia Fields Country Club has asked its namesake village to annex its property, which includes 25 homes and two 18-hole golf courses. The private club opened in 1915 and will once again host the PGA’s BMW Championship in August.

The club requested annexation after more than a century operating in unincorporated Cook County because of frustration dealing with the county’s bureaucracy, club President William McErlean said.
