$1.2 million creek restoration at Villa Park golf course to begin

Elmhurst and Villa Park officials will break ground Saturday on a $1.2 million water quality project at Sugar Creek Golf Course.

Sugar Creek has suffered from shoreline erosion, sediment deposit accumulations and degraded water quality in recent years. The restoration project aims to fix those issues with the creek, which runs through the nine-hole public golf course and provides habitat and flood storage.

Chicago Golf Club awarded two USGA championships

The USGA announced Tuesday that Chicago Golf Club will host an upcoming U.S. Women’s Open and Walker Cup.

The club, located on the western outskirts of the Windy City, was one of the five founding member clubs of the USGA in 1894. Chicago G.C. was established by C.B. Macdonald, who also built the original course before his protege Seth Raynor redesigned it in 1923. The course underwent a recent restoration that included the addition of 13 bunkers that were discovered as part of Raynor’s original design.

Lake Bluff residents to weigh in on future of golf club property

When Lake Bluff voters cast their ballots in the Nov. 8 election, they will be asked to provide some perspective on the future of the Lake Bluff Golf Club amid a larger question of stormwater mitigation efforts in the area.

Village residents will be asked to vote on a nonbinding referendum whether a wetlands nature preserve should be created on the Lake Bluff Golf Club property, and that property converted into an open wetland and recreation area with the opportunity to sell wetland credits.

Chicago Golf Club to Host 2033 Women's Open & 2036 Walker Cup

Chicago Golf Club, in Wheaton, Ill., has been chosen by the USGA as the host site for the 2033 U.S. Women’s Open Presented by ProMedica and the 2036 Walker Cup Match. The historic club has previously hosted 12 USGA championships, most recently the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open in 2018.
Located in Chicago’s western suburbs, Chicago Golf Club was founded in 1892, debuted the first 18-hole course in the United States in 1893, and became one of five founding member clubs of the USGA in 1894. The storied club was established by Charles Blair Macdonald, who was the first U.S. Amateur champion in 1895 and served as the first vice president of the USGA.

Puttery Chicago nightclub with indoor mini-golf courses opens

A new type of nightclub is opening in Chicago, focused on miniature golf, drinks, and music. Puttery Chicago is located at the 932 W. Randolph Street in the Fulton Market neighborhood.

Clayton Stanley is the director of operations at Puttery Chicago. Clayton joined ABC7 to talk about this new nightclub and what visitors can expect when they walk through the front doors.

Golf Center Des Plaines Receiving Tee-Up System Upgrades

New upgrades are teeing off at Golf Center Des Plaines as, according to the park district, the driving range’s tee-up system is set to receive “modernizing upgrades.”

According to Des Plaines Park District Executive Director Don Militic, the tee-up system has been in use since 2006 and is in need of upgrades.

The unseasonably warmer weather is welcome news to some businesses, like car washes.

They're soaking up a late surge along with the sun. CBS 2's Marissa Perlman reports from Bensenville, where another type of business is benefitting from the good weather: White Pines Golf Course.

On an average November day, the golf course has about 30 tee times. On Thursday, it had 300, and it's all because of the beautiful weather.

Highwood's Patrick Flavin, Deerfield's Vince India end golf season on upswing

Patrick Flavin's attempt at earning his PGA Tour card through a year's worth of Monday qualifiers made for a captivating story throughout the 2022 season.

Both Flavin and Deerfield's Vince India tied for 24th in the last of the four-tournament series. That meant both are assured eight early season starts when the PGA's alternative circuit begins play in January.

Voters oppose cutting down thousands of trees in Jackson Park and South Shore for Obama Center & Tiger Woods golf project

Over 80% of residents of Chicago’s South Side voted to oppose the removal of thousands of trees because of construction around the Obama Presidential Center and a proposed golf course project from Tiger Woods golf course construction company.
Tiger Woods’ company, TGR Design, has also proposed the restoration of the two parks’ golf courses by combining them into one 18-hole PGA-worthy course. According to documents of the design, this development could involve removal of 2,100 trees from the parks.

Lake Bluff stormwater management discussions continue in wake of apparent rejection of golf course alternative

A majority of village residents said on Election Day they do not want to see changes at the Lake Bluff Golf Club, but further discussions regarding overall stormwater management in the area are set to continue.

After lengthy conversations involving the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) and the Lake Bluff Park District, village residents voted on Nov. 8 on an advisory referendum whether a wetlands nature preserve should be created on the existing Lake Bluff Golf Club property. Then the property would be converted into an open wetland and recreation area with the opportunity for the Park District to sell wetland credits.

3 people, 56 dogs OK after plane goes down at Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee

Three adults and dozens of dogs on board a twin-engine plane are OK after an emergency landing on a golf course in Waukesha County Tuesday, according to sheriff’s officials.

The people on the plane that went down on the back green of the Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee had injuries that were not life threatening, according to Lake Country Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Matthew Haerter.

2,000 Volunteers Needed For BMW Golf Championship In Olympia Fields

The BMW Championship is set for Aug. 15-20, 2023, at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Golf fans interested in volunteering at the tournament are encouraged to sign up soon, as volunteer positions available for the event are filling fast.

Select volunteer opportunities are still available to assist in staging the BMW Championship – the penultimate event of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs. Volunteers perform key tasks inside and outside the ropes during tournament week, including welcoming thousands of patrons each day, assisting corporate hospitality guests and selling apparel in the event’s merchandise tent.

Rewind: July 2002, The Glen Club Hosts Its First Tournament

The Glen Club opened in 2001, and soon after its opening was already in line to host important tournaments, the first of which was the Fuji-Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship, held on July 17-19, 2002. Recall that in 2002 international diplomacy was askew after the 9/11 attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. Therefore hosting a friendly international contest at this time garnered more esteem than it would in normal times.

His advice is also well-founded — he and his team feed about 1,500 people at Medinah on Thanksgiving Day — a mix of members who either make reservations for the club’s sit-down brunch or who order customizable takeaway meals that can serve 12. “In three or four hours, we’re sending out 100 birds with all the sides,” he says of the morning window when those Thanksgiving Feast packages are picked up. “It’s like we’re Santa’s Christmas elves but in Thanksgiving mode.”

Canal Shores Golf Club receives donation as ecological restoration continues

An ecological restoration of a second hole at the Canal Shores Golf Club is one step closer with the approval of a $20,000 grant.

The Fairways Foundation, a New Jersey-based environmental advocacy firm, has announced that the Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association will receive a $20,000 grant with the goal of restoring the canal banks at ninth hole at the course straddling the Evanston/Wilmette border.

Golf continues to ride wave of pandemic-induced interest in Lake County

A pandemic-fueled increase in golf at Lake County Forest Preserve courses continued this season.

Revenues from golf course operations surpassed $5 million for a second consecutive season, a surprising and unexpected milestone.

"Prior to this COVID golf wave we're still riding, those numbers seemed almost unattainable," said Alex Eichman, the district's chief of golf operations.

BMW Championship golf tournament seeks volunteers

The BMW Championship golf tournament, whose proceeds benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation of the Glenview-based Western Golf Association, is seeking volunteers for its event Aug. 15-20, 2023, at Olympia Fields Country Club. Volunteers perform key duties inside and outside the ropes during the tournament, including welcoming patrons, assisting corporate hospitality guests and working in the merchandise tent.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must commit to working at least three 4- to 6-hour shifts during the tournament week. The deadline to apply is Dec. 19.
